Domain Name Registration
Registering domain names is now quite a straightforward process, and costs a few pounds each year for each one.
There is no reason why you cannot have many domain names registered, and these can simply be idle and ready for use, or they can all point to a single active web site.
You do not have to register your domain name with the same company who provides your web site hosting, or indeed with the same company who develops your web site. The domain name can be "pointed" to any web server, regardless of location.
One hugely important aspect of domain name registration, is the renewal process. It is vital that you, the domain name registrant, keep a record of when the domain name is due to be renewed, and you yourself ensure it is done on or before the due date. If a domain name registration expires, anyone else can register it, without recourse, and can then point it to their own web site - immediately taking any goodwill you may have built up over the years along with any repeat visitors come along. Sometimes the new registrant will sell the domain name back to you, but depending on the situation this will be several hundred pounds for small, low traffic sites, and probably huge amounts for large popular sites.
I tend to work with a handful of domain name registration and web site hosting providers. I can manage the whole process for you, or you can register your own domain names and set up web space for your web site, through IDAQ.
